Most of you might be aware about some of the most famous skincare product manufacturers being put under pressure to reproduce their products only using safe ingredients and remove those that are regarded as toxins. A larger portion of people around the world today are health-oriented, which is why they are concerned about the chemical ingredients in makeup products and lean towards natural makeup.
Sometimes it even gets hard to distinguish between safe and unsafe products that are stacked in supermarkets. Well, these tips will help you pick naturally safe organic makeup products when you next go shopping.
1. Know which claims are regulated:
Most lotions and washes include claims in their labels such as ‘dermatologically tested’, ‘for sensitive skin’ and the like. They might just be claims and the possibility of such products being clinically tested is very unlikely. Hence the only way to determine if they are safe to use is by looking at the ingredients.
2. Identify the Commonly used Petroleum-based ingredients:
Several brands include petroleum derivatives. Some of these ingredients include mineral oil (Paraffinum Liquidum), petrolatum (petroleum jelly), Propylene Glycol, PEGs, Polysorbates and DEA/MEA/TEA.
The reason why brands use these is because they are inexpensive and readily available in large quantities. However, these ingredients are likely to be contaminated with carcinogens during the manufacturing process, thus causing allergies for users – a reason why natural makeup is best.
3. Chemical preservatives aren’t good:
Preservatives are meant to increase the shelf life of products. Until products become natural makeup products, they are not going to do good to our skin. Some of the commonly used chemical preservatives include parabens such as ethylparaben, methylparaben, butylparaben and propylparaben. These are found to cause tumours in breast and skin. Phenoxyethanol is another preservative that is linked to depressing the central nervous system. Benzyl Alcohol is another preservative that can cause contact allergy.
4. Avoid unnecessary fragrances:
Synthetic fragrances are widely used fragrance ingredients in skincare products, which are usually derived from petroleum and coal tar. These products are linked to causing health problems such as birth central nervous system disorders, other birth defects and others.
5. Choose ingredients which you recognise:
We invest in several products such as lotions, creams and others that often contain ingredients that cannot be deemed safe for use by a common person. Hence what you could do is to not buy products that have unrecognizable ingredients and rely upon organic makeup, aka naturally safe ones.
This brings us down to only one point – buy only natural makeup products that have the safest ingredients accepted for use.
