In the UK, the United States and Canada there is a yearly observance called black history month. In the UK it is celebrated in October and in the United States and Canada it is celebrated in February. This remembrance is for the people and events that have shaped the past of people from these countries of African descent. There is a large amount of black history month activities Missouri residents choose to keep themselves occupied with.

There are many varied activities one can experience in the state of Missouri during this time period. African Americans have contributed a lot to this American state and have helped it become what it is today. So the activities are spread far and wide over the state.

There are many activities held. A few of them will be at the state museum. There will be a series of talks that are centred around a platoon of urban soldiers that fought in the American civil war. They were the first black platoon to be involved in combat during that war. The museum is home to many different objects that reveal what life was like during the time the talks are centred on, so it a must do activity.

A cultural centre will be holding an exhibit that is of an interactive nature. These exhibits are photographs and letters that chronologically detail important unions of workers that fought for African American workers rights. Workers that were part of a union were the backbone of many workforces, and this exhibit shows the urban American influence in this part of the country’s background.

State parks will also be offering walking tours in their parks. The tours will cover any parks that been shaped or moulded through architecture that has been made by only African American companies. This is to show the influence that these companies have had in the beautification of the parks.

There will be activities at various sites of historical significance around the state as well. Depending on the site there will be exhibits or speeches given about their significance. The sites histories are mainly to do with slavery in that region and they also showcase the areas of residency that were predominantly urban and the past behind them as well as the people and products that came out of this area.

The idea of celebrating urban identity has been in existence since 1926, back then it was only a week long. In 1969 black scholars suggested it be changed to a month but only in the year of 1976 did the United States government recognize the legitimacy of what the scholars had suggested. The US was the first country to officially legitimize it. In 1995 Canada’s government legitimized it and in 1987 the UK’s government legitimized it.

Having a month to focus on urban heritage is important and a good thing to celebrate. However more importantly is the notion of integrating urban achievements more into the global culture. Education, the media, art and literature are important aspects that need to be thought on in order to achieve the goal of integration. For it fine to remember the past and to learn from it, but one also must look to the future and how it is shaped by the actions of the present. In order for this future to be satisfactory actions must be taken every day to be more inclusive of all people from all walks of life.
